Preface :

2020–21 has been a year of devastation coupled with distress for most of us. With rising cases of Covid-19 through mutating variants across the globe, everyone is looking forward to see a day when this pandemic will be over and we can breathe without the fear of getting an infection. However, amidst this pandemic, technologists saw an exponential trend of adopting digital platform in our daily lives, thereby creating new avenues for an upcoming trend which is the adoption of Low Code Application Platform (LCAP).

This article attempts to articulate the key drivers of LCAP adoption in 2021 in order to enable the digital leaders across organizations to book the front seat in the digitalization approach of their enterprises.

Audience :

The primary audience of this article are Decision Makers of an Organization, like CXOs, IT Heads, Architects, Delivery Heads, Program Managers etc.

This article is also targeted towards Client Partners/Relationship Managers, Solution Architects and Sales/Pre-Sales Teams of SI & MSP organizations, who help in IT enablement of different enterprises across industries, to pitch/propose the right platform for the right requirement.

What is a Low Code Application Platform (LCAP) ?

Low-code is a visual approach to develop software solutions.

It abstracts the complexities of the underlying code and gives a platform for Business & IT to come together fostering the participation from Business SMEs and Business Analysts in solution development by democratizing the software delivery model.

It automates every step of the application development lifecycle and promotes continuous collaboration between business & IT.

Low Code platforms help enterprises to stay relevant and meet the needs & demands of today’s customers at a rapid pace breaking the traditional myths & models.

Who are the Top LCAP Players ?

Best Place to get the top LCAP players in the low code space is to visit Gartner’s & Forrester’s reports.

Key LCAP Drivers For 2021 :

Demand for RAPID Application Development :
There is a tremendous amount of pressure within the enterprises to digitize & automate its internal processes. Low Code/No Code Platforms add fuel to such initiatives through Rapid Application Development.

Rise of the Citizen Developers :

Several independent researches found the scarcity of talented developers with the right coding skillset who can fit the bill to deliver the solution, modern businesses are looking for. Hence, businesses are looking forward to leverage the process owners themselves to automate the processes that they have defined. With little or no IT skills, Low Code & No Code platforms are allowing such citizen developers to build the applications through visual, drag & drop modelling tools.

Demand for Cloud-Native & Omni-Channel Experience :

With Cloud Native, being the de-facto standard for App development in 2021, every organization wants to comply with the same. Ensuring a seamless experience across Mobile, Laptop & Tablet is also an implied requirement. Low Code platform empowers the developers to navigate through these demands at ease and out of the box most of the time.

Need for Hybrid Integration :

With the rising adoption of SAAS based applications such as Slack, DocuSign, Dropbox, Google Drive, Salesforce etc. integration has more importance in today’s VUCA world than ever before. Its highly likely that a complex business process may be leveraging multiple cloud and on-premise applications to render the desired output. With a rich set of OOTB connectors, Low Code platforms makes integration a breeze.

Urge to Catch the AI Bus :

Low-code platforms are democratizing the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by abstracting the underlying complexities of machine learning algorithms & mathematical models. The platforms are helping in image detection, natural language processing, predictive analysis & risk monitoring out of the box with little or no coding.

Get the best of SOA & Microservices world :

While Microservices is leading the league of today’s application development strategy, implementing a microservice in a containerized environment may exhaust even a the most enthusiastic developer. With great flexibility of availability, portability and application deployment that it brings in, the downside of infrastructure complexity is often overlooked. Low Code platforms bring in the value of runtime isolation of the Microservices world along with the loose-coupling feature of SOA that promotes reusability.

Covid-19 and its After-Effects:

There has been numerous articles on how this pandemic has disrupted our lives worldwide. But notably, as a side effect, it has pushed enterprises of all sizes, both in public & private sector to embrace digital platforms for survival. Hence, adopting a Low Code solution has become almost inevitable to accelerate such transformations.

Conclusion :

While there are abundant reasons to adopt a Low Code platform for any enterprise, the year of pandemic has definitely added a sense of urgency to the momentum. With most of the workforce being remote in private as well as public sectors, its imperative that even traditional government run civic bodies will have to transform the way they function. Low Code Platforms, with its power to turn ideas into reality in a matter of days instead of months, is definitely going to work as a remedy & savior in most of such digitalization use cases.
